Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a type of behavioral therapy that gradually exposes people to situations that provoke their intrusive thoughts and/ or make them anxious. The response prevention part of ERP refers to choosing to NOT engage in the compulsions/ safety behaviours that have been provoked or “triggered”. This is done under the guidance of a therapist at the beginning. The ultimate goal of ERP is to free people from the cycle of obsessions and compulsions by retraining the brain, so they can live a meaningful life that is guided by their values.

ERP is fundamentally about facing your fears and learning  to handle discomfort and uncertainty.

ERP was developed in the 1970’s to specifically treat OCD. It is recommended by the Canadian Psychological Association, the International OCD Foundation and is considered the gold standard treatment for OCD.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and commitment therapy is a powerful and evidenced based  approach to psychotherapy that stems from traditional behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. It is a psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies along with commitment and behavior-change strategies to learn a new and more effective way of handling difficult thoughts and feelings, so that they have less impact and influence over your behavior.

ACT gets you in touch with what really matters to you, your deepest desires for how you want to behave and what you want to do with your life. You then use these values to guide, motivate and inspire what you do.

The aim of ACT is to increase psychological flexibility or in other words, to  maximize human potential for a rich and meaningful life while effectively managing the pain that goes with it.

ACT twas developed in the mid 1980’s by psychologist Steven C. Hayes and  is a powerful evidenced based therapy that has been used to successfully treat several psychological disorders such as: OCD, addiction, anxiety, depression self-harm, post-traumatic stress, and eating disorders.
